from Jason Hastonhide details 16:57 (15 minutes ago) to Richard Goodfellow , iainwood@google.com bcc Jason Haston date 11 Sep 2009 16:57 subject Re: Google Application mailed-by gmail.com Hello Mr. Goodfellow, I would like to share my thoughts concerning preparing my recent interview. This covers post interview studying, the interview and my actions after before the interview. I write with a positive note! After the interview with Mr. Ian Wood, it seemd clear that I needed to study up on some topics. And studied I have! On the following topics: Studied the 'ping' protocol, lamenting not having mentioned "ARP/RARP" or the ICMP packet layout Researched kill signals. There are many more than the two I use! Learning the fork command methods. I know RAID well, but could have prepared more! Memorized the passwd file as I missed the second field, 'has password' and the sixth field, user's HOME Hopefully my answers were sufficient on topics of: load balancing of servers and switches. I should have included applications as well! PID for init is 1 run levels shell programming ssh monitoring of remote machines variations on echo * On the day of the interview, I was recovering from a partial root canal the day before. The good news is that my Wisdom Tooth will replace this bad tooth. Nonetheless, I was a tiny bit run-down. Dark chocolate would have helped here! In preparation for the interview, topics studied were: single line sort commands and code MapReduce GFS zfs Internat Protocols (this helped!), TCP/IP Architecture stack x86 Solaris installations perl Cloud Computing MySQL Database Adminsitration algorythms Google address in Pyrmont, verifying it was near my wife's property I reviewed my own background in: C++ spatial mapping query software designed for map intersections data warehousing GPS location algorythms US Tax code processes snmp polling large networks in NSW machine management techniques for regions of Australia/New Zealand and 35 US States Server Health and Status Monitor / machine control / prefabricated scripts using sh keys and daemons over a trusted network Thanks for reading. It has helped me quit a bit to compile my thoughts. Hope to hear from you soon, -Jason Haston 0448 284 442 jason.haston@gmail.com re: 2009/9/5 Jason Haston

It covered the topic of Disaster Recovery for a Windows server. My reason for attending was to compare this technology with Bare Metal Restore techniques used in the OpenSource arena ... Somehow, the speaker volunteered myself to run the demo. The demo entailed using a full/incremental backup strategy on an enterprise Windows machine. The backup media was an external disk. Then this platform was declared unusable, so a new server must be built. A second laptop was brought in & booted with a special startup disk from the same backup vendor. The backups were applied from the external disk, and the system recovered. This took 15 minutes and was impressive indeed! This is powered by a 'Shadow Copy' algorithm using write to disk methods & VSS. VSS is employed across many other backup strategies. There are many aspects which set this solution apart. Notable points from the demo: "Only product that can backup the physical and virtual environment every 15 minutes" uses VMware technology storagecraft.com.au/INSTALL for a system checker on whether it will run on your hardware Employing this solution at Crane would certainly save the Windows staff time in man-hours and funds in maintenance fees. Comments? I can share the 9-month demo software with you and relate my experience. These gentlemen would certainly appreciate a call. The next function will be at a Country Club in November. They and StorageCraft are located in North Sydney. Apparently, this software works on Linux platforms as well, but only with recovery to the same hardware. I will be testing this. That is most of it, -Jason -----Original Message----- From: Jason Haston Sent: Friday, 11 September 2009 3:28 PM To: CG Operations MRT Windows Cc: Jason Haston Subject: notes from ShadowProtect seminar -----Original Message----- From: Jason Haston Sent: Friday, 11 September 2009 3:29 PM To: James Gillon Cc: Jason Haston Subject: FW: notes from ShadowProtect seminar fyi

12may2009 12pm Great to learn Australia CSIRO ThinLinux Australian Government blog http://www.utbox.net/fax/news/planting Plant and Planting Information The planting instructions are: Choose a suitable container with drainage holes. Fill with seed raising compost and firm down gently. Water generously with fine spray and leave for 30 minutes to allow water to soak into the compost. Break off each seedstick carefully and push it point first into the compost up to the printed depth line. When seedlings emerge leave the stick in position and allow the strongest plant to grow on. CeBIT Day 1 and 2 (May 12 and 13) "Eucalyptus Camaldulensis", aka Red River Gum. This Australian native is well known for providing shade in the harsh sun, stabilising river banks and stopping erosion. Well adapted to Australian conditions it's also found a home in many countries around the world. When selecting a place to grow please remember red river gum can grow to around 40-45 metres, we've even heard of a 700 year old one! Germination time: 21-28 days Seed to flower: 24-36 weeks
